EastEnders

Edward "Eddie" Moon is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by David Essex. Eddie is the father of Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd), Tyler Moon (Tony Discipline) and Anthony Moon (Matt Lapinskas). Along with his children, Eddie was introduced to bring a "new generation" of the Moon family to the programme. Essex began filming in April 2011 and first appeared on screen on 3 June 2011.

A NOTE FROM DAVID

After discussing with the creative team of Eastenders the character and story lines I decided to join the cast as head of the Moon family, Eddie. Working with very good actors under the pressure of four episodes a week was challenging but something I very much enjoyed. I still remain friends with my Moon sons.

The River

The River follows the tranquil life of lovable, Cockney, ex-convict Davey Jackson (Essex) who is lock keeper on the canal near the village of Chumley-on-the-Water. His peaceful life is turned upside down by the arrival of the neurotic, sharp-tongued Sarah MacDonald (Murphy). Over the six episodes of the series the love-hate relationship between Davey and Sarah blossoms into a shaky romance, their potential happiness often spoiled by the machinations of Davey’s cunning Aunty Betty (Vilma Hollingbery) and the hapless intervention of Davey’s deputy Tom Pike (Shaun Scott).

A NOTE FROM DAVID

Idyllic in its setting although we were warned whenever we went into the canal to avoid swallowing any water as it was not as clean as it looked. I remember my pet the baby pig being changed at least three times, as it seems pigs grow very quickly. A lovely cast and I really enjoyed filming the series.

The Kenny Everett Show

David was a regular guest on the Kenny Everett Show, both as a performer and character actor.

A NOTE FROM DAVID

The Kenny Everett Show was always fun to do, wacky and ground breaking in its own way. I especially enjoyed doing the improvised sketches with Kenny as the classic character, Sid Snott!

War Of The Worlds

David originally played the part of The Artillery Man in Jeff Wayne's musical version of HG Wells' The War Of The Worlds with Richard Burton. Since its inception in 1978, Jeff Wayne"s original double album has become one of the most groundbreaking and best-selling musical works of all time – with over 15 million copies sold and 330 weeks in the UK Album Charts to date, a number one album in 11 countries, two international hit singles, a number-one music DVD, 8 years of worldwide arena tours, and huge critical acclaim across the globe (and probably the universe!).

The Dishwashers

The Dishwashers directed by Nikolai Foster, opened at Birmingham Repertory Theatre before a sell out UK Tour. The Dishwashers by Morris Panych, starred David as the lead role - Dressler. When young Emmett was a high flyer in the City he was a customer in an upmarket restaurant but now, thanks to a recent reversal in his fortunes, he"s starting a new career there – as a dishwasher! His new colleagues are Dressler who"s happily been scraping and scrubbing for over 30 years and is a bit of a philosopher, and Moss who"s sadly well past his sell by date and heading for the dustbin. Together they attack the endless supply of crockery that descends from above. In this world of dirty dishes, soapsuds and despair, playwright Morris Panych brings wit and humour to their quest for existential meaning.

David Says: Dishwashers was an intriguing piece of work. A three handed black comedy that featured three dishwashers in the underbelly of a high class restaurant. It was certainly a challenge as I played Dressler the main protagonist in the piece. I was supported by a terrific cast, Andrew Jarvis and Rik Makarem and directed by Nikolai Foster

All The Fun of The Fair

Set against the backdrop of a travelling funfair and packed with dazzling stunt sequences, hilarious crafty cons and plenty of Rock"n"Roll, All the Fun of the Fair was a brand new, action-packed musical. Inspired by David Essex"s debut album, this roller-coaster ride is underscored by a helter-skelter of hits such as Winter"s Tale, Hold Me Close, Gonna Make You a Star, Me and My Girl Nightclubbing, Silver Dream Machine and Rock On.

A modern musical love story with a heartbreaking twist. David starred in the musical "All The Fun of the Fair" both on tour (2008,2009,2011) and in the West End at The Garrick Theatre, 2010

David Says - “All The Fun Of The Fair"#pulled together the remarkable talents of writer Jon Conway and director Nikolai Foster, the creative team behind the musical. The three of us wanted to develop a substantial story that would encompass my words and music using the back drop of a travelling funfair. Thankfully the show and it"s wonderful casts enjoyed great success both touring the UK and in London"s West End."

Aspects of Love

Aspects of Love is a musical with a book and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart. It is famous for the song “Love Changes Everything.” Based on the novella of the same name by David Garnett, the piece focuses on the romantic entanglements of actress Rose Vibert, her admiring fan Alex Dillingham, his underage cousin Jenny, his uncle George, and George’s mistress, sculptress Giulietta Trapani, over a period of 17 years. The “aspects” of the title refers to the many forms that love takes in the show: love between couples, both as romantic infatuation and as married people; children and their parents; and hints of same-sex attraction (Giulietta and Rose).
David Says: "I was walking on a beach in Cuba when my mobile rang. It was Andrew Lloyd Webber asking me to play the part of George in his musical, ‘Aspects Of Love’. I admitted I’d never seen it but would take a look at the score and script when I returned to England. Still not sure it I wanted to do it or not I met with Nikolai Foster who was going to direct the show. I was so taken by his enthusiasm and vision that I agreed to do it, and I’m glad I did."

Footloose The Musical

David is looking forward to fighting the martians as 'The Voice of Humanity' at the Dominion Theatre along side his dear friend Jeff Wayne. David originally played the part of The Artillery Man in Jeff Wayne's musical version of HG Wells' The War Of The Worlds with Richard Burton.
David Says: I saw ‘Footloose’ in the West End before I agreed to join it and was taken aback by a terrific young cast and a really fun show. It seemed to me to play the part of the grumpy vicar was too good a chance to miss.

Boogie nights 2

Essex starred as St. Peter in a new musical ‘Boogie Nights 2’ set in the 1980s, which played to packed houses throughout Britain, opening in Bromley in August 2004 and closing in Blackpool in October 2005. In 2006, he returned for a week to ‘Boogie Nights 2’, playing in Wolverhampton.
David Says: "Great fun to do Boogie Nights 2. I even got to wear a pair of angel wings and importantly met someone I was going to work with in the future on ‘All The Fun Of The Fair’, Jon Conway, the writer."

Beauty & The Beast

David wrote the ballet score for a version of “Beauty and the Beast” for the Russian All Stars Company, an international ice skating ensemble, which was staged in 1995/1996. The premiere of the ice-skating ballet “Beauty & The Beast” took place at the Royal Albert Hall 5th December 1995- a gala charity performance in aid of Elton John’s Aids Foundation
David Says: "It was a privilege to work on the music and production with The Russian All Stars and their spectacular version of “Beauty And The Beast”."

She Stoops To Conquer

David played Tony Lumpkin in Sir Peter Hall’s production of ‘She Stoops to Conquer’ (1993), proving himself to be a fully established stage actor, able to carry the whole show. Essex had been a long time fan of Sir Peter and was delighted to be working with him as well as his fellow actors, Donald Sinden and Miriam Margoyles.
David Says: "Extraordinary actors Miriam Margolyes and Donald Sinden, plus director Sir Peter Hall was what drew me to be part of this production of ‘She Stoops To Conquer’ toured and played at the Queens Theatre in the West End."

Mutiny

In 1985, David co-wrote and starred as Fletcher Christian in the West End musical Mutiny!, based on the novel Mutiny on the Bounty by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall. The score produced two more hit singles, including “Tahiti,” his tenth Top 10 success.
David Says: "Having appeared in successful musicals and written hit songs, it seemed a logical step to actually write a musical. Looking round for subject matter, my manager Derek suggested the mutiny that happened on HMS Bounty. The show was a great adventure with the wonderful Frank Finlay as Captain Bligh, me as Fletcher Christian plus an enormous boat which traversed and caroused on hydraulics almost killing the cast every night! But we survived and “Mutiny” ran for a year and a half at the Piccadilly Theatre."

Childe Byron

While in New York recording a musical version of HG Wells “War of The Worlds”, David saw the play “Childe Byron” about the life of Lord Byron. He worked with director Frank Dunlop on a hugely successful run at The Young Vic in which he played the title role.
David Says: "I first saw the play “Childe Byron” in Greenwich Village, New York. I thought it was a powerful piece and brought it back to England. Playing the poet Byron, who was such a colourful character was both interesting and fulfilling as was working with Sarah Kestelman and director Frank Dunlop. The Young Vic was a happy time, I remember Richard Burton coming to see the play and leading a standing ovation."

Evita

David starred in the the role of Che Guevara in the 1978 West End production of Evita, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical about Argentine political leader Eva Perón. Approached by Sir Tim Rice to meet with legendary Broadway Director Hal Prince, Essex embraced the opportunity to portray the iconic revolutionary figure who had been such a powerful symbol for his generation in the 1960s. As the original Che in this groundbreaking British theatre production, Essex helped bring to life the rock opera that had begun as a concept album in 1976. His performance as the narrator and conscience of the story contributed to what he describes as "a landmark in British theatre," establishing Evita as one of the most successful musicals of its era before it went on to conquer Broadway and spawn the acclaimed 1996 film starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas.
David Says: "Che Guevara for me and my generation in the 60’s was an iconic image. So when I was approached by Sir Tim Rice to meet with legendary Broadway Director Hal Prince with a view to play Che in a new musical called “Evita,” I, of course agreed . Evita was wonderful to do, a landmark in British theatre and good to be the original Che"

Godspell

David gained significant recognition playing Jesus in the original 1971 London production of Godspell, a performance that helped launch his career as a performer. The musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak had opened off-Broadway earlier that year and features a series of parables based on the Gospel of Matthew, interspersed with modern music set to traditional hymns. Davids portrayal of the central role in this production marked a pivotal moment in his career, setting the stage for subsequent success across music, theatre, and film. The show's innovative approach to presenting Christ's parables through contemporary musical theatre provided the perfect vehicle for Essex to showcase his talents and establish himself as a major performing artist.
David Says: "I was at a cross roads wondering whether to carry on with acting and music when my mentor and manager Derek Bowman called me to attend an audition for a new musical called ‘Godspell’. I auditioned and was offered the part of Jesus. I asked the director should I grow a beard, he said no we play Jesus as a red nosed clown! Godspell for me and an ensemble cast of sparkling talent was a truly wonderful experience which turned me into an over night success."
